Does Microsoft force its employees to use Hotmail/Outlook and rid themselves of Gmail?

Answer 1

No - we don't. I manage the development team accountable for the user-visible elements of outlook .com, and formerly Hotmail. I've often had employees join the team who used GMail as their primary email. They aren't forced to improve, and back the Hotmail days, whenever we had a substandard product, I had fashioned some individuals who chose never to switch. You mentioned that friends and family are Product Managers. They can be responsible for identifying which features get into our product to keep us prior to the competition. While no-one will force them to change, I'd posit that to do their job well, they must be familiar both with this products and with competing products. I take advantage of outlook .com as my primary email, but I likewise have secondary accounts on GMail, Yahoo, and even AOL.
